Team Confidence Chart

To avoid burn-down, try the team Confidence Chart.

When coaching a Scrum team, the Scrum Master and the Product Owner shared their concerns that the team is not behaving cross-functionally. So, to improve cross-functional team behavior, we implemented a different technique that raised developers’ sensitivity towards the shared sprint goal.

 

The Team Confidence Chart

During the daily scrum:

  • Each team member reflects privately on the team’s ability to meet the sprint goal
  • then, each member votes on a confidence scale from 1 (lower) to 10(higher).
  • Outlier differences are discussed. And the team agrees on daily activities to improve their overall confidence by the end of that day.

The Scrum Master collects notes on reasons for dropping or increasing confidence to share in the team retrospective.

In a roundabout way, this information radiator on daily team confidence fluctuations raised awareness on areas where cross-functionality was necessary. The team team members responded to these challenges more enthusiastically than to earlier verbal appeals.
